At one point, I needed to get into college. his is what you could call a portfolio. The pages are grey and pink with Arial font. The writing is from a 18 year old trying to sound like what he thinks an artist is supposed to sound like. Most of the places did not let me in, and neither did Michigan, but the few that did made me feel like I could be of positive value to society.
I chose to go to Michigan anyway, because they allow anyone into the architecture program after two years in exhange for tuition. They also have a good football team and I always wanted to go when I was growing up. It was a choice I would make again. Give the kids a chance if you can.
I am almost completely sure that I will remove this from the internet as soon as I reach a certain degree of ‘professional’. What that level is I am not sure of yet. It’s a bit embarassing to look at. The garages are too skinny, the titles too literal, the writings induce a certain level of cringe. The largest issues I had were running out of space on the 8.5x11 papers, and the lack of any alignment tools in Google Slides. I believe my mom was able to scan them at Staples after a long process and email them as JPGs.
Memories around this time include writing inspirational quotes on different whiteboards, waking up early to get some shots up before school, waking up even earlier to get a workout in before getting some shots up, being hungry, and falling asleep during class. Where I was not more skilled than others, I worked harder. Like most things in life, sometimes this was helpful, and other times not so much.
When I started teaching architecture for high schoolers years later, I just pretended like I was teaching myself.
